This is practically my first weeknote - but it’s the 2760th week of my life, so I’m numbering accordingly.
I started a new job this week. I’ve been out-of-work for nearly five years so I’ve been trepidatious. I ended the week tired but relieved. It’s at a place with an awful lot of acronyms, codenames and context which comes out in drips and I was completely brain-full by the second day. I’m hoping to defrag the hard drive over the weekend.
It’s on-site, for good reasons, so I’m a commuter again. I have a choice between a 45-min bike ride or a 15-min train ride with a ten-min bike at each end. I’ve been trying the train this week but have had problems every single day with cancellations or delays. I think I need to steel myself for the full bike commute. I’m not worried about getting to work on the bike, but I am worried about cycling home tired. There’s an obvious solution!
I’ve neglected my allotment this week. I hope the leeks will forgive me. I’ll visit it tomorrow with dread. Be warned weeds, I’m coming.
Grab-bag
- Watched Rise of the Planet of the Apes with the twelve-year-old, E. The Caesar trilogy a good watch. Having been largely raised by iPad, E is fully memed-up and was a bit upset that it didn’t contain Dr Zaius or the Statue of Liberty on a beach. Big fan of the orangutan Maurice, though.
- I’m into the second series of Humans - I missed it when it first came out and I imagine it hits differently now that it feels like a close future. It’s good.
- I finally managed to sign-up for an Open University Maths degree. I’ve wanted to do this for so long - probably since I unwisely chose to do arts A-levels. Books arrived today - looks like the first module will be familiar ground, but I’m sure harder terrain will follow.
- I’m reading Kevin Mitnick’s as-told-to/auto biography. A tale of many capers.
- Fast finishes of the Guardian cryptic all week. Though I lament my theology degree, I got to briefly use it for 23d in the Prize today - River goes under trendy home of theologian (5)
- Chambers Missing Words - errata for Chambers dictionary. Some excellent words therein.
